How will the use of name.space. nameservers
affect my normal internet access? Do I still
connect to my provider as I always do?
Using name.space nameservers enhances your internet
experience without affecting your normal connectivity.
You still connect to your provider as always. Name.space.
networks resolve all InterNIC/ Network Solutions, Inc.
domain names transparently as well as all name.space names.
--Nameservice does not engage on your machine until after
--your network connection is established to your provider.
--Then, when you enter an address in your web browser, etc.,
--the nameserver is checked and sends a reply to your
--machine, which then completes the connection.
--Encourage your provider to use the name.space. rootservers
--so all of their users can benefit from name.space too, as
--well as paving the way for the future of the net.
How does name.space. work with the search
engines? If someone turns up a name.space link,
will they be able to connect to it?
Name.space is not yet universally
resolvable, therefore requiring users to set their
tcp/ip nameserver settings to the name.space.
network. Download the free application for your
platform to switch your settings to name.space
with the click of your mouse, and start using
name.space right away.
Send email to your provider and
request that they configure their nameserver to
check the name.space network instead of
InterNIC/Netsork Solutions, Inc. nameservers.
The free market of the internet will force
the existing monopoly held by InterNIC/Network
Solutions, Inc. to carry all of the new root names
in name.space.
Why should an average user want to use name.space as
opposed to the existing dns system?
Name.space names are easier to remember than
the cryptic acronym soup of traditional dns. If
you know a company's name, you know it's net
address...no
"http://www.whatever.company.com/~company/new/index.html"
any longer...when just "http://whatever.company"
will do it!
How much does it cost to use name.space if you
are only a web browsing email slinging, chatroom
hanging user? (and not a groovy web spinner or
system operator)?
Access to name.space nameservers is free to all.
And what if I have a home page on my access
provider's network? How can I have my own
name.space name and what can I do with it?
If you have your own home page, you can
register a name in name.space. It is desirable to
arrange a "soft home" or "virtual domain" with
your service provider so your page will answer
directly to your name, without the
"/~user/homepage.html". Then, your provider must
nameserve your name on their system. Contact us
about low cost monthly rates for your own "soft
home" web page on participating networks.
Once I have a "soft homed" web page with my name.space
name, will everyone on the net be able to use it?
Encourage your friends to set their nameserver settings
to name.space and they can connect to your name.space
addressed web page. Tell them to pass along copies of the
free name.space installer to their friends and associates.
For the time being, this is the only way to connect to
name.space addresses. Name.space will eventually be
universally reachable everywhere on the net once the
InterNIC/Network Solutions, Inc. monopoly is dissolved into
the free market.
If I register my name in name.space, how much does it
cost?
Name.space charges an flat annual rate of USD $30.00
including registration renewal and nameservice, URL forwarding, and email forwarding.
No other hidden costs or setup fees.
Assuming I do register a name in name.space....how long
will it take to process my registration and how soon can I
use it?
The name.space registration process takes place over the
world wide web. The user completes the required forms using
their web browser, and their request is processed instantly,
and the name is functional in minutes. Registrations are
charged to your credit card on line via our secure server
which uses encryption to insure that no evil snoops on the
net get a hold of your credit card number.
Is that kind of secure server really safe?
Encrypted transactions over the web are more secure than
using your credit card in a store or restaurant. You are more
likely to have a card number stolen from someone picking the
garbage of a shop or restaurant than from a super sleuth who
decrypts data siphoned from the net. Low tech beats high
tech. :)
The name is ready in minutes? How do you do that?
The registration process is fully automated to create the
fastest internet name registration process on the net. No more
waiting days while some company investigates who you
are and what you are doing on the net.
Do I have to use the names listed or can I choose any
name that I like?
New names can be created on demand if they don't
already exist. The cost is the same regardless if you
register to an existing rootname or if you create a new one.
So, once I create a new rootname, do I "own" it?
No name.space policy holds that words are universal, and
therefore not property. Speculation is frowned upon, fair use
is encouraged, and trademark infringement is illegal. All
names created are available for use by all. The openness of
the name.space naming system allows for many combinations of
names --all of which must be unique --including the use of your
actual company name as it appears on yourletterhead.
